Denial – it’s a loaded word. And we are all better at it than we might want to admit. It is so interesting how everyone sees the problems in the world and wants to fix them, but they never see the source. Can we repair this broken world with a tiny bandaid here and there? Of course not! We need the only true remedy: Jesus!
[churchpack_superquote]How do we know that we are sinful? We forsake the riches of God for the worthlessness of this world.[/churchpack_superquote]
So how do we take and squelch denial and hold to Christ? It’s in the renewing of our minds. Romans 12:1-2 says, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Paul makes this appeal by the mercies of God. In other words: he knows that it is only by His mercies in which Paul can make the appeal that followed. Present our bodies as a living sacrifice. What a difficult picture! To be holy is the only way to be wholly acceptable before God. This is what daily worship of God looks like.
Paul continues. This world is not our identity anymore. We have been transformed, but not just physically. Our minds are renewed in Christ. This change leads us to think in a Godly way and to discern what is our correct action before God. In Christ, we no longer are lost in a sea of faces, but directed where we ought to go in a clear manner. This is how we discard denial and realize the issue. Our renewed minds can now see clearly. Not only this, but our mouths have the words that give the remedy to all. Denial of our intrinsic problem is no more. We are sinners. Transformation and renewal has come. We have been saved!
